George Leslie Mackay,
1844-1901.
Born in the Scots Presbyterian immigrant settlements
of Zorra, Oxford County, he established Canada's first overseas mission in 1872 in Taiwan. He was famed for his
unorthodox but successful methods, respect for local culture, his Taiwanese
wife "Minnie", and outspoken opposition to Canada's head tax
-- all ahead of his time. In 1882 with over $6,200 in donations from the
citizens of Oxford County he founded the first western school in northern
Taiwan, Oxford College, which subsequently became Aletheia University.
He also established Taiwan's first modern hospital, a school for women,
and a museum. This statue is a gift from Aletheia University to the County
of Oxford, 2003.
