Sprig & Sprouts Great Adventure

By: Shirley Lovell

As Sprig and Sprout, two blades or grass,
Poked up above the ground,
Along came hungry Mrs. Cow,
One bite, they're stomach bound.

Through four dark pits they rolled and tumbled,
At last they reached the udder.
If they had gone the other route
They'd now be in the gutter.

They noticed how their emerald coats
Had changed to creamy silk
As Sprig and Sprung had now become
Two tiny drops of milk.

This home seemed warm and cosy.
They marveled at their luck.
But suddenly they were dislodged
By one gigantic suck.

A shiny milk truck picked them up.
They bounced 'cross hill and dell,
Off to a place for making cheese.
They bid the farm farewell.

They landed in a swimming pool.
Their coats then tinted yellow,
But Rennet poured into the vat
Soon turned them both to jello.

Then suddenly they felt a stab
That stung like many darts.
They couldn't dodge those sharpened knives
That sliced them into parts.

One part of them became the curd,
The rest became the whey.
"I feel so shrunk and shriveled now."
Squeaked Sprig to Sprout that day.

Into the press they both were squeezed,
Till their poor heads were aching.
But soon emerged with golden coats,
As cheddar they'd been making.

Transformed from green to white, then gold.
At times their fate in doubt.
But somehow managed to survive
Our lucky Sprig and Sprout.

At last on plate of yummy cheese
Our Sprig and Sprout are found.
Alas! Their fate they must repeat.
Once more they're stomach bound.
