Their Message

By: Shirley Lovell

The war, it seems, was long ago
We were not there, we could not know.
We did not feel the stinging tears,
See the pain or know the fears.

But many did and when they tell
Their stories we must listen well.
We feel their pride in victory,
Their triumph o'er the enemy.

Remember too their horror stories.
That war is war with little glories.
We hear their message, very clear,
That freedom's price is often dear.

Remember to the ones who died.
Their sacrifice will be their pride.
They'll never see their children grow,
Or watch another sunset's glow,

Or feel again the tender kiss.
Or know how much their friend's will miss
Their laughter and their playful fun.
'Twas taken by another's gun.

Your lives were lost, the war was won.
Our grateful thanks for all you've done.
But in our hearts we hear you say.
Our world must find a better way.
