A fire fighter plays an ever increasing role in emergency services. The term fire fighter only covers a portion of what a fire fighter does. Of course they still fight fires, but they also deal with hazardous materials, medical situations and as we learned all too well in 2001, disaster and terrorism situations. One role that can often be overlooked is that of vehicle extrication. In serious car accidents, often minutes can mean the difference between life and death. The vehicles involved in an accident are often too damaged to allow for a traditional entry or exit. This instance is where we see hydraulics used the most.
Thanks to the fact that technology is always evolving, the Save A Life Fund committee was able to purchase a thermal imaging camera for a lot less money than it was going to take when the project began. Thus there was a surplus that was used for the beginning stages of outfitting the fire fighters with a bigger arsenal of hydraulic tools. They have taken delivery of the tools and a practice session was held so the fire fighters could acquaint themselves with the tools. Photos of the practice are available here
What follows is some information on the tools that have been purchased. The system that has been purchased can be increased with other tools. Adding to the system is what the Save A Life Fund Committee intends to do.
