For Your Information

If it Sounds too Good to be True…it is!

Seniors are targeted for many reasons-loneliness, lack of family support, age vulnerability and for health reasons. Seniors tend to be more trusting and less likely to hang up the telephone. Bright, wise and worldly people have been duped by deceptive telemarketers who build relationships and gain the trust of seniors before they become victimized. What can you do to protect yourself? Stay alert and remember some of these tips when you answer the telephone, open your mail or open the door.

If you must pay to play - don’t.

A prize should always be free!

If you are asked to give out bank or credit card information - don’t.

If a caller claims to be a government official, bank official, lawyer etc. be wary - ask for a telephone number to call back.

If it is a limited opportunity and you must act immediately - don’t.

1-900 numbers always have a cost.

If you are guaranteed a prize but need to buy a magazine or other product – don’t.

If you have won a prize but need to send money for shipping and handling - don’t.

Don’t allow anyone to do home repairs unless you called them. Beware of the renovator who comes to your door.

Always get two or three estimates for home repairs.

Always check a contractor’s background with the better Business Bureau.

Don’t Fall for a Telephone Line!

Better Business Bureau 519-673-3222

Call 519-485-2269 for more information.

You will always have canvassers from reputable charities calling at your home. As well, you will have non-reputable agencies solicit door-to-door. Make sure the canvassers have relevant identification, carry reliable information about the organization for whom they are raising funds and are able to provide the charitable tax number to allow them to operate. Do not make a donation if the canvasser refuses to give you the information such as a brochure in advance of the donation.

TIPS TO REMEMBER

If it sounds too good to be true...IT IS!

Don't give out bank or credit card information over the phone unless you initiate the call.

Never pay any money for any prize that you have won. A prize is FREE.

Don't pay for promotional items like pens, in order to claim your prize.

Don't be afraid to HANG UP!

1-800 and 1-888 numbers are free of charge.

1-900 numbers are NOT FREE

Don't let anyone intimidate or bully you.

If you need work done on your home - get several estimates.

Ask door to door sales people for identification.

Make sure all blank spaces are filled in on any contract you sign and you have a copy.
