Seniors are targeted for many reasons-loneliness, lack of family support, age vulnerability and for health reasons. Seniors tend to be more trusting and less likely to hang up the telephone. Bright, wise and worldly people have been duped by deceptive telemarketers who build relationships and gain the trust of seniors before they become victimized. What can you do to protect yourself? Stay alert and remember some of these tips when you answer the telephone, open your mail or open the door.

You will always have canvassers from reputable charities calling at your home. As well, you will have non-reputable agencies solicit door-to-door. Make sure the canvassers have relevant identification, carry reliable information about the organization for whom they are raising funds and are able to provide the charitable tax number to allow them to operate. Do not make a donation if the canvasser refuses to give you the information such as a brochure in advance of the donation. TIPS TO REMEMBER
