49 - Internet Explorer - Extract Graphics, Music Files, etc. from a Web Site

Sometimes when cruising on the Internet, a web page stands out and there are features it contains be it, graphics, audio or whatever and it just has to be saved to make its contents available for personal use. (You wouldn't want to break any copyright laws)

Choose a web page

http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0.4/whatsnew/

http://www.ingersoll.ca/

Left click on File

Select Save As...

Select or Create a Folder in My Documents to store the files

Set Save as type: to Webpage complete (*.htm,*html)

The File name: will be the name of the Webpage.

Left click on Save

Open My Documents and select the folder containing the saved web page.

Note : - a new folder would have been created with the name of the Webpage saved.

Open the newly created folder to see all the graphics from the Webpage

Note : - All Webpages are not created equal. This procedure could be a lost cause with many Webpages. Don't give up, there are Search engines to find what you want somewhere on the Internet. If it's just a graphic you want to save, many times, just placing the mouse pointer on the graphic and with a right click, a menu will appear and allow you to Save Picture As...

To save Webpage background music, an audio recorder is required.

The simplest I have found for XP is Audacity. (Haven't been able to get it to function with Vista and my hardware)

The Download and Installation instructions are very basic and easy to follow.

Select Stereo Mixer as the Input device.

The operating controls are the same as any other recording device

Left click on to start the recorder

Open a web page with audio background.

http://www.cowboyfun.com/

To have the Webpage and recorder accessible all the time

Right click on the Taskbar

Select Tile Windows Horizontally

At the completion of the audio, left click on

Left click on File

Select Save Project As...

53 - Internet Explorer - Put Address Book on Links Toolbar
I could not find anything on the Internet so I ask the originator of the tip for more info. The old story about "It's not what you know but, who you know" couldn't be more true. Many thanks to I.F. from the Brantford Senior's Computer Club.

57 - Internet Explorer - Toolbars

It is possible to add more Toolbars and, more Toolbars. It seems everyone and their dog has a toolbar everyone just has to have.

Don't get carried away with too many. Leave space to properly display a web page.

My recommendation for the most powerful for adaptability would be what is being specifically offered by Google for your browser.

To download the

Open your browser. (the toolbar is unique to your browser)

Use any one of your search engines

Type in google toolbar

Select, download and install the application

To open the Google webpage for additional applications to add to the toolbar

Make choices to suit your preferences as there are too many to list them all here.

58 - Internet Explorer - Web Page Tips

This subject does not cover how to design web pages, it will offer suggestions to make viewing of web pages more pleasing.

If you only use your computer for basic e-mail and occasional web surfing and don't mind being in the dark ages, then any basic computer with a 17" monitor to show 256 colours at 800 x 600 pixels (14" with 640 x 480 is now obsolete) would be sufficient.

However, to see pictures sent to you of the grandkids with their scratches and bruises, and a special birthday card just made for you in full colour, spend some of their inheritance and upgrade the old processor to handle a 20" or larger monitor with a multi million colours.

The quality of text on the monitor can be questionable and to verify an optimum setting, install the M$ Cleartype Tuner - Click Here

Most web pages are set to be displayed at 800 x 600 pixels. With a 20" monitor, its default resolution would be set to 1680 x 1050 ,

A web site using 800 x 600 would only use 1/2 of the monitor's viewing space. This is an excellent opportunity to magnify the page, simply by holding down the Ctrl key and roll the scroll wheel on the mouse forward until a satisfactory text size is reached.

The Ease of Access Centre also has other viewing enhancements. With Vista Premium, just sit back and listen.

See 1 and See 217 for topics previously covered.

If Pop-ups are a problem, click on Tools and open Internet Options, select the Privacy tab and ensure the Pop-up Blocker is turned on.

Some web sites, including some banking sites, use pop-ups for important features. Blocking all pop-ups disables such features. To allow specific web sites to use pop-ups, while blocking all others, you can add specific web sites to the list of allowed sites.

Web page pictures can also be blocked, click on Tools and open Internet Options, select the Advanced tab and under Multimedia, remove the check mark from Show pictures.

Firefox can block images, and allow them from specific web pages.

If you're new to using the Internet, open Favorites and select Organize Favorites

When the Organize Favorites window opens

Click on New Folder

Create a Folder for every letter of the alphabet.

Note ; - This is not taking you off the deep end, with only a few Favorites saved each week, you will exceed 1000 in just 4 or 5 years.

Alphabetically Add each Favorite with a unique and specific name to be easily recognized as to why it was originally chosen.

Tips of the Month

You can create multiple home pages in IE7. When IE7 opens to your primary home page, select a new tab and choose a favourite (music, webmail??). Select Tools, Internet Options, General tab. In the Home page field, start a new line and click on the Use current and the OK buttons Now when IE7 opens, both sites will appear in separate tabs.
