226 Windows Live Mail
This product has been out there for some time now and appears to me to be a good replacement for Outlook Express. It is well documented at this site and you can download it from this web site.

About upgrading to Windows Live Mail

Windows Live Mail is the successor to Microsoft Outlook Express 6, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail desktop Beta. If you have Microsoft Outlook Express 6, Windows Mail, or Windows Live Mail desktop Beta installed on your computer, when you install Windows Live Mail, all of your existing accounts, settings, and e-mail messages are automatically imported into Windows Live Mail. Any contacts in your Microsoft Windows address book are also imported when you install Windows Live Mail.

You can't create Microsoft Outlook Express e-mail identities in Windows Live Mail. Instead, to protect each user's e-mail with a password, create a separate Windows user account and password for each person who wants to use Windows Live Mail on the computer. If you upgrade to Windows Live Mail from an Outlook Express account that contains multiple e-mail identities, you can import the e-mail messages and account information from the identities by clicking Identities on the Windows Live Mail File menu.

When you first open the application, use F1 (Help)

Left click on Tools, select Account(s) and set them the same as in Outlook Express.

Left click on File, select Import Addresses and Messages.

Left click on View, select Layout and set as shown below for your best security. (The other Layout options are OK as set by default)

Test the new application by sending a message to yourself and be sure you can receive it as well

Most of the materiel we have covered for Outlook Express 69 to 137 also apply to Windows Live Mail

227 PowerPoint - How to open E-mail with PPT/PPS attachments
When an E-mail is received with a file attachment with an extension of PPT (PowerPoint) or PPS (Power Point Show), there are 3 possible ways to open it.
  1. A free download from M$ called PowerPoint Viewer 2007 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them.
  2. If you have the M$ PowerPoint application (stand alone version - $280.00 or with the M$ Office Home & Student - $150.00), it lets you view, edit and create full-featured presentations.
  3. If you have OOo (OpenOffice.org - $00.00), it lets you view, edit and create full-featured presentations.

228 PowerPoint - How to Extract Images and Sound
There are many times when you receive via e-mail, a PPT/PPS attachment and you wish you could save the pictures for your Desktop or to create a new slide show using some of the pictures and perhaps, the sound too. This can only be done with an application capable of editing PPT/PPS.

Open a PPT/PPS file with M$ PowerPoint

Left click on File and select Save as Web Page....

When the Save As window opens

Choose or Create New Folder in which you may store the files produced during the conversion.
File name: will be the same as the PPT/PPS you are converting and can be changed to anything you like as long as the extension is .htm
Save as type: must be set to Web Page (*.htm; *.html)
Left click on Save.

To see the results of the conversion

Open the folder you chose for the conversion.
All slides will now show with a file extension of .jpg
All sound files will now show with a file extension of .wav

If no file extensions are shown, see 159

********

Open a PPT/PPS file with OOo Impress.

Left click on File and select Export...

When the Export window opens

Choose or Create New Folder in which you may store the files produced during the conversion.
File name: will be the same as the PPT/PPS you are converting and can be changed to anything you like.
File format: must be set to HTML Document (OpenOffice.org Impress) (.html; .htm)
Automatic file name extension is set.
Left click on Save.

To see the results of the conversion

Open the folder you chose for the conversion.
All slides will now show with a file extension of .jpg
All sound files will now show with a file extension of .wav

If no file extensions are shown, see 159

As you can see, there is basically very little difference in these two applications to perform the conversion.

230 Utilities by Glary
Glary Utilities is a free, powerful all-in-one utility. It offers numerous powerful and easy-to-use system tools and utilities to fix, speed up, maintain and protect your PC. At present, it is available only for Windows XP. It would be appreciated if one of our group would test and report their findings in one of our forthcoming sessions.

231 Control Startup Programs
Take a good look at your Task Bar and all the tiny little icons in the space next to your clock (Sys Tray) at the bottom right of your Desktop. If you have in the excess of a dozen, you could be tying up too much memory (Ram) with applications sitting and waiting to service your request, and they could be sitting there for days and never be used and others we have no idea of what they're used for. If you have used a small routine where you typed msconfig into the Run application, then you know your computer may be loading applications into memory during Startup and will seldom if ever, be used.

Your first approach should be to review the procedure to create a Startup Hold folder as per 204.

For the sneaky icons appearing and not in the Startup folder, a better option than using msconfig has evolved. Software Explorer built into Windows Defender  makes it much simpler to control your Startup applications.

WinXP users can download Windows Defender and an icon for Software Explorer will be created and be available when you open the Control Panel.

Vista users will find Windows Defender is already available and only need to open it and left click on Tools and select Software Explorer.
