5a - Force Documents to Open in Word Viewer instead of Word

1. Download the Word Viewer application from M$ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090
2. Install the downloaded application
3. Right click on your *.doc file to show a menu similar to the one shown.
4. Use your mouse pointer to highlight Open With

5. Left click on Choose Program
6. When the Open With window opens, select Microsoft Word Viewer

7. Click on the box to Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
8. Left click on OK

Note: this application will only allow you to View or Print the *.doc file - editing is not available.

Once this procedure has been completed, the next time you right click on your *.doc file, you can just left click on Open

or

You can also double left click directly on your *.doc file to open it.

5b - Force Document to Open in OOo instead of Word

If you do not have any M$ Office applications on your computer, I suggest downloading and installing OOo and save yourself a few big bucks.

1. Right click on your *.doc file to show a menu similar to the one shown here

2. Use your mouse pointer to highlight Open With 
3. Left click on Choose Program...

4. When the Open With window opens, select swriter
5. Click on the box to Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
6. Left click on OK

Note: this application will allow you to View and Edit and Print the *.doc file 

Once this procedure has been completed, the next time you right click on your *.doc file, you can just left click on Open

or

You can also double left click directly on your *.doc file to open it.

7 - Application - Make a Document Fit to 1 Page

Microsoft Word

Be practical, you can't expect much more than a page and a quarter to be reduced to a single page if you expect it to be read without a magnifier.

1. Click on File and select Page Setup...

2. Re-adjust left and right margins (within the limits of your printer)
3. Re-adjust top and bottom margins
4. Left click on Edit and select Select All    Ctrl + A
5. Select a smaller Font size. (affects only selected text)
6. Check line spacing
7. Check character spacing.
8. Edit your text for repeats.
9. Select Help for procedures for Sizing and Spacing

Microsoft WordPad

Steps 1 - 9 from above are the same.

OOo is slightly different and you need to left click on Format and select Page...

28 - My Desktop - Create a Folder

If your Desktop is set up to Show Desktop Icons.

1. Right click on your Desktop.
2. A menu similar to the one shown here will appear

3. Move your cursor to New
4. Left click on Folder
5. A New Folder Icon will appear on your Desktop
6. Type in a New Name for the New Folder.

If your Desktop is set up to Hide Desktop Icons

1. Follow steps 1 - 4 above.
2. Open the Desktop Toolbar on the Task Bar.

3. Right click on New Folder 
4. Left click on Rename
5. Type in a New Name for the New Folder

50a - Internet Explorer 6.0 - Create a Folder for Favorites

When you discover new web sites on a particular subject you wish to visit again, don't waste your time writing down the addresses and storing it somewhere to get lost. Store all of your unique web addresses into their own Favorite Folder.

1. Left click on Favorites in the Menu Bar
2. Select Add to Favorites...

1. When the Add Favorite window opens, left click on New Folder...

2. When the Create New Folder window opens, type a new name
3. Left click on OK
4. Left click again on OK

50b - Internet Explorer 7.0 - Create a Folder for Favorites

When you discover new web sites on a particular subject you wish to visit again, don't waste your time writing down the addresses and storing it somewhere to get lost. Store all of your unique web addresses into their own Favorite Folder.

Left click on Favorites in the Menu Bar

Select Add to Favorites...

When the Add Favorite window opens, 

1. Left click on New Folder...
2. When the Create New Folder window opens, type a new name

3. Left click on Create
4. Left click again on Add

119a - Outlook Express - Save Attached Pictures

There are several options available to you when you wish to save pictures received from family or friends.

1. This illustration shows there are a number of pictures (JPG) in the Attach: field
2. Right click on one of the JPG files to display the menu shown.

3. For this example, Save All... has been chosen
4. A left click on this choice will open the Save Attachments window

5. When the Save Attachments window opens

6. Under Attachments To Be Saved: select your choice(s) or click on the Select All button
7. In the Save To field, enter the location to save your pictures.
8. Left click on the Save button

Note: This option does not allow you to create a new folder, nor does it allow you to change the name of the picture. This makes it difficult to find a specific picture at a later date

1. You also have an option to right click directly on a picture to display the menu shown.

2. Left click on Save Picture As... to open the Save Picture window.
3. When the Save Picture window opens.

4. Set the Save in: field to a folder you choose. My Pictures is recommended, however, you can Create New Folder (see 119b) to store special pictures to make their accessibility easier to find.
5. In the File name: field, enter a name you can recognize.
6. In the Save as type: field,  you can select JPG or BMP.

Note: A BMP file will be approximately 10 - 15 times larger than a JPG file. BMP files will not be compressed to save space on your Hard Drive.

7. Left click on the Save button.

119b - Outlook Express - Create a Folder for Pictures

Special Pictures need to be stored in special places where they are readily and easily accessed.

Each new subject or series of pictures should have its own identifiable folder within the master folder of My Pictures

Begin with a right click on the picture you wish to save and select Save Picture As...

1. When the Save Picture window opens, left click on the Create New Folder icon

2. A New Folder icon will appear. Type in a New Name (My Flowers) for the New Folder
3. Left click on Open

4. A Save Picture window will reopen but now, the Save in: will be My Flowers
5. Type in a recognizable File name: (Passion Flower)
6. Left click on Save

Note: This new folder "My Flowers" can now be used for all new flowers you wish to save whether it be via e-mail, digital camera or from the internet.

199 - Firefox - Create a Folder for Bookmarks

When you discover new web sites on a particular subject you wish to visit again, don't waste your time writing down the addresses and storing it somewhere to get lost. Store all of your unique web addresses into their own Bookmark Folder.

Left click on Bookmarks in the Menu Bar

Select Bookmark This Page...   Ctrl+D

When the Add Bookmark window opens, 

  1. Left click on
  2. Left click on New Folder...
  3. Next to Name: type in a New Folder Name
  4. Left Click on OK
  5. Left Click again on OK
