38 Hotmail - Email Messages and Service
Hotmail was founded by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia and publicly announced on June 5, 1996  It was one of the first free webmail services. 3 years and 8 million users later, it sold to Microsoft for $400 million.

There is an interesting story behind the discovery of Hotmail and is well worth the time to read how it all began. Click on this following link.

Hotmail has gone through many changes since it began and continues to change on an ongoing basis. To get the very latest on what Hotmail has to offer, click on the following link.

For other Email Services, see 224

120 Outlook Express - Save an Email Letter
Open OE
Select your Inbox
Open the Email you wish to save
Left click on File

Select Save As...

When the Save Message As window opens

In the Save in: field
Select My Documents
At this time, you may wish to Create New Folder
Type in an appropriate name for the New Folder
With your "New Folder" selected, left click on Open
In the File name: field
You may wish to leave the name as it is or type in a new name.

DO NOT change the Save as type: it must remain as shown - Mail(*.eml)

To save multiple Email from your Inbox, see 124

122 Outlook Express - Save Copy of Email in your Sent Folder
Open OE

124 Outlook Express - Save Many Emails On a Disk/Mass Storage The Quick Way
Open Outlook Express
Open Windows Explorer
Right click on the Task Bar and select Tile Windows Vertically
When OE window opens
Select the folder (Inbox, Sent Items, etc) with the Email you wish to save
When Windows Explorer opens
Select the Disk/Mass Storage location
Select the Email you wish to save
Drag and Drop your selection to the Disk/Mass Storage.

You may use one of your Shift keys to Move the files out of OE to your Disk/Mass Storage

Reverse this procedure to Drag and Drop .eml files from your Disk/Mass Storage to a new computer running M$ OE or Windows Live Mail.

127 Outlook Express - Send an Email
Before you send an Email using OE
You must have a Virus checker
Set up your Account with your ISP settings for Email Address and PSW.

Rogers also have Help, however, it is more centered around Rogers Yahoo web mail. Execulink Help is also incomplete as far as I'm concerned. It's no wonder why these providers have so many customer complaints. Hopefully, your ISP will supply you with enough info when you sign for their services.

Set up Outlook Express (See 69)

Once you have set up your account, you will find Send an Email is well covered on the Internet and with the Help in OE. Feel free to use them.

159 View Double Extensions
An extra (false) extension is a trick virus writers use to fool people into opening a file. With extensions turned off if someone sends you a file named BAD.TXT.VBS you will only see BAD.TXT. If you've forgotten extensions are actually turned off you might think this is a text file and open it. Instead, this is really an executable Visual Basic Script file and could do serious damage. You should always have viewing extensions turned on.
Always set your file browser to display the full file name

What we covered here is only about one half of the solution. For a more thorough safety measure, there are fixes available for your Registry. Before working with the Registry, it is recommended to use one of your search engines to find out everything you possibly can about editing the Registry and how to Restore your computer in case you create a Registry error preventing you from using your computer.

Security and Filename Extensions has more detail and pointers to help protect your system from a virus.

The old saying of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" doesn't mean a thing should you get hit with a virus you could have prevented with a few minutes of computer tricks.

180 Windows Explorer - Make all Folders Show Details/Thumbnails Automatically
Through all my searching, the only way to do this is with Vista OS.
Open Windows Explorer
Select any folder with graphics
Left click on View
Select Large Icons or Extra Large Icons
Left click on Tools
Select Folder Options...

Vista

XP

When the Folder Options Window opens

Select the View tab
Left click Apply to Folders

Note: - There are slight differences in the wording under Folder views i.e this folder to all folders of this type and Apply to Folders

Your graphics will now appear as Large or Extra Large Icons. All other files will open with Details View.

224 Email - Services Available
Outlook Express suffers from all of the hacks and viruses feeding on the world’s most popular Web browser. There are more secure email applications available and with more user friendly enhancements. M$ recognizes this problem and are constantly downloading security updates to our computers. We can't ignore these updates without jeopardizing our protection from the hackers out there determined to wipe us out.

M$ latest and greatest, most secure, is Windows Live. It can be downloaded free, on computers using XP SP2 or later, or Windows Vista (Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not supported.)

There are many excellent alternatives to M$ Email and they can be found at these web site. Some have features M$ have yet to discover or have on hand but holding for later announcement. It's called "planned obsolescence".

Tips of the Month

Click on the icon for top 10 tips for sending e-mail while traveling. It is written for Hotmail, however, if you have your own ISP address and PSW with you, you can still connect to use the internet and receive/send email. Remember, if you are using someone else's PC, clear all traces of your activity and be sure to Sign Out to prevent the next user from using your PSW.

To find out what the weather is going to be for the next few days, click on the icon to open the Google Search Engine and type in weather area/zip code

FLASH - We have all received Email similar to the one below. It happens when an Email address becomes obsolete, usually due to the intended receiver changing their ISP.

The above Email appeared on my system a few days ago. My first suspicion to it possibly being SPAM was the word [Bulk] in the Subject column. Rather than open it, I checked its Properties, Details and Message Source. When the Message Source window opened, I was able to spot 3 other clues in the message itself. First it stated I had sent the Email at 2 a.m. when my computer would have been off for more than 2 hours. The most convincing were the words, VIAGRA and UNSUBSCRIBE. There could have been other clues but, I didn't want to take a chance of the message to completely open. It was Deleted posthaste
