62 - Mouse - Change Size and Style of Pointer

Some people find it hard to find the default Windows mouse pointer on the desktop. This may be the result of poor eyesight or other physical problems but can be overcome quite easily.

Windows XP gives you a choice to make the pointer larger so it can be seen more easily. You can even change the pointer color to black and the pointer will stand out on white backgrounds.

  1. Click on , Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Click the "Mouse Icon."
  3. Click the Pointers tab in the Mouse Properties window
  4. Under Scheme, select Windows Inverted (extra large) (system scheme) from the drop-down list.
  5. The display area (top right of window) will show what the pointer size will be.
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK

Tips & Warnings
If you like the stationery someone else uses, open the message, click on File and select Save as Stationery... Rename the stationery.
Some e-mail programs will not accept Stationery; the recipient's mail program must be able to accept messages formatted as HTML. Check with the recipient before sending mail using Stationery.
Use a minimum of images and/or colors in a Stationery template. Adding images builds up the file size, which can result in a long download.

Tips of the Month

There is no complete list of icons for the Desktop. Windows XP has only one Icon - Recycle Bin. All of the rest are added by Applications you install - if you give them the permission to install an icon on your desktop. Icons can just be another shortcut to an application and could be a duplicate of what you can also find when you use the and All Programs. For more info, click on Help and Support and type in - desktop icon.

Open Questions & Answers

Q. - When I want to print a page of a document, how do I find the page number?
A. - If you're looking at a document, the page number is displayed on the Status bar. If you're looking at a web page, I believe you would have to use the Print Preview or check the web site itself to see if they have set up a Print option. You will have to search for it, they don't seem to have a standard place to put it.

Q. - When I download a file, should I use Save or Run?
A. - If you chose to use Save to download, you will have a record of what was downloaded  and if at some 6 months later, you think you should download a file, going through the procedure of Save, you will be asked if you want to overwrite the same file you already have on your system. It's a time saver of sorts, as some manufacturers don't change their available downloads for many months and sometimes, years. If you use Save, many large downloads can be interrupted by an outage and a reconnection will just continue from the point of the interruption. Some Runs will notify you when it is a copy while others just copy over what is already there. Long Run interruptions require a restart from the beginning thus setting themselves in a position for another possible interruption and restart. Interruptions are not as common now with broadband, in the days of early dialup, it was a real pain in the butt. So, I'm not saying you can't use Run, if you use Save, it's a lot faster to reinstall something you have already saved on your hard drive than to go back on the web and try to find something you downloaded 6 months ago.
