There were 13 of us who attended. It was a cold sun filled day. We all had to wear our parkas as the heat was turned off in the dining room. Just because we switched to daylight saving time shouldn't be a reason to turn on the air conditioning. However, no one fell asleep.

There was 1 new attendee, Verne Harvey. Welcome to the ISAC Computer Support Group.

15 - Windows Briefcase
I have never used Briefcase, I don't know anyone who does, but I'm sure there are millions who do.
From the internet, to me, it appears to be too easy to loose files.
We have 2 desktops and a laptop. When it becomes necessary to update one or the other, I use a Flash Drive, external USB hard drive or use my network setup.
When doing file updates (copy to) from one device to another, a warning is displayed asking me to Confirm File Replace

I then select the appropriate button for what I want to do with the file.

44 - Internet Explorer - Customize Your Toolbar

 Open Internet Explorer
Right click on the Toolbar at an empty spot after the last icon.

A small window will open and you can left click on Customize...

The Customize Toolbar window will open as shown.

Select one of the toolbar buttons to
Add -> or <- Remove
Current toolbar buttons: can then be adjusted with the Move Up and Move Down buttons.
Note the ? in the upper right hand corner.
Left click on the ? and see the mouse pointer change to
Left click on any field or button in the window for a brief explanation of the particular window component.

46/59 - Download and Use Animated Names -

After several hours viewing many web sites, I happened on one you might be interested in. It has about 250 different fonts from the sane to insane, 256 colours, choice of size, motion, etc., etc. It includes the instructions on how to download the final result and you can use them as you desire AND it's free.

160 - How You Get A Virus

The following site has a very good exclamation of this everyday problem.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/virus.htm {howstuffworks is good for anything from airbus to x-ray, viagara is excluded}

161 - Protection Against Virus

Numero Uno - It is very important to keep your computer OS software up to date at all times. This is best emphasized at the M$ site below. Don't put off 'til tomorrow what you can do now.

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/viruses/intro_viruses_remove.mspx

Somewhere in your All Programs, you will find an icon for Windows Update or it may be hidden in your IE under your Favorites. (If you can't find it, click "HERE" and save the location in your Favorites)

You will see the M$ window and it will have a pix similar to this giving you the status of your computer for receiving updates.

Click on Pick a time to install updates. (Select a time when your computer is always turned on and you're connected to the internet)

M$ updates will NOT work with Firefox and I doubt with any browser other than M$ IE.

There are free antivirus programs available.

Check with your ISP (internet Service Provider)

ZoneAlarm

AVG 7.5 Free (See Topic 188)

DO NOT USE THE INTERNET OR E-MAIL WITHOUT ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION ON YOUR COMPUTER.

186 - Popups - What are they and how to block them

Popups are small windows flashing on your monitor with messages you did not ask for and would never want to see again. The best explanation I could find was at the Wikipedia web site. It also has addresses of available popup blockers on the internet. Best known from their name and reliability are Google, Yahoo, and MSN. They install an additional toolbar on your web browser with the blocker which can be turned off and on, plus other options unique to the one you install. The following is an example with M$ IE with the Google and Yahoo toolbars added.

Note the message below the Yahoo toolbar notifying me of a blocked restricted file and is asking me to Click here for options...

If I know it is a trustworthy web site, I will select an option to allow the web site to proceed with what it wants to show me.

188 - AVG 7.5 Free Download and Install

This is a well known free antivirus program. They do have more powerful versions available for a price with enhanced internet security. However if all you need is an antivirus program to replace an outdated Norton AV, then you can't go wrong with this package.

Before you take this step, check with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to see what they have to offer. Rogers, Sympatico and Execulink broadband users have AV plus other internet and e-mail protection available now at no extra cost.

Click on this link to AVG to download and install the application. The file is approximately 20MB. If you're on dial up, start the download, drive down to Timmies and have a coffee and doughnut. The download might be finished by the time you get back.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

When the application is finally installed, you will be asked to check for virus definition updates and to do a complete scan of your hard drive(s). Start the scan and go and get another coffee.

The setup also asks when an appropriate time it would be to check for updates and run the scan. Set it to a convenient time when the computer is on and connected to the internet.

 189 - Outlook Express - Delete Your Deleted E-Mail

For some reason known only to M$, when you delete an e-mail message in Outlook Express, it goes into the Deleted Items folder just in case you pulled a booboo and you want to retrieve it. Should you have OE setup to clear the Deleted Items folder when you exit OE, you now believe the message has been flushed down the drain. Not so. Do a search for deleted items.dbx and check its properties. It should be an empty file. You can open the file with Notepad and see the messages you have deleted. Was Bill kissing up to the CIA to make their job easier?

To really clean out your Deleted Items folder, when you complete the search, right click on deleted items.dbx and select Delete When you are asked to Confirm File Delete, click on Yes. Your last and final step to the clean up is to empty your Recycle Bin.

Note - All the e-mail you send are stored in the Sent Items folder. Delete them and they're still there. Another favour for the CIA? Perform a search for sent items.dbx and get rid of it the same way as you did for the deleted items.dbx.

Tips of the Month

Here are a couple of links to show you what you have in the "beige box" under your desk. Add them to you "Favorites/Bookmarks". Don't wait for a catastrophe to happen before you learn the difference between a hard drive and an optical drive, especially when tech ops charges you big bucks to teach you the difference over the telephone :-)

Just click on this address ;-) What's In That Box - Shows What's in Your Computer and How it Works.
