There were 17 of us who fought the weather to discuss the following topics. Of all the requests received, Close a frozen Computer was chosen by 6 of the attendees. Thank you, I know I wouldn't have had time to do another 5 subjects.

There were 3 new attendees, Roseann Moyer, Sharon Peter and Bonnie Dennison. Welcome to the ISAC Computer Support Group.

Some of the topics covered would have been better presented if they were in Flow Chart form. Anyone with experience working with Flow charts, please step forward, we can use your expertise.

I apologize for being so late getting this letter out to you. "The Interlude" Web site takes first priority. I also made my notes in M$ Word and it did not like to be copied into M$ FrontPage thus requiring many extra hours of reformatting. I hope to be better prepared before the next "The Interlude" goes to press.

Beware Phone Scam

I was interrupted by a phone call offering me a special deal on my Credit Card interest charges. The phone number was 712-429-0253 and it appears to have originated in Iowa. Of course it was unlisted but a Google search for the first 6 numbers got me this web site http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/index.cfm?sid=8334&sc=98

A call to the local OPP asked me to contact Phone Busters at http://www.phonebusters.com/ which I did and I'm still waiting for their response. I also tried to contact the Iowa State Police on the internet and after a 1/2 hour of missing links and mishmash of crap with nothing to do for reporting fraud, I gave up.

Beware Mail Scam

Joan MacLeod brought in a letter received by her husband informing him he had won a large sum of money. To make his claim he had to fill out a form with every intimate banking and credit card data he possessed and send it back to the sender.

Until the law gets more serious and goes after these thieves, we're going to see a lot more of it. Please put your friends and family on the alert

18 - Burn to a CD using Roxio CD Creator

Open the Roxio Selector application
Click on the help button
The options to make a Music, Data, Photo, or a Video CD and Copy a Disc are rather ambiguous and give no great detail with this window. It will tell you what you can do, however, it does not tell you how.
Select one of the buttons and use the Help in the window when it opens and it will tell you how to perform the button function.

The following web site is helpful  http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/default.html

Select the product you are using (there are presently 5 Creator models listed on their web site)
It is next suggested to update your CD drivers.
CLICK TO ASK ROXANN a specific question.

19 - Close a frozen Computer

Take a 5 minute coffee break, your computer could just be too busy updating
Move the mouse around and if your pointer stays in one place, check the keyboard by pressing on the Winkey to open the Start menu.
If your computer still appears to be locked up, your only resource is to shut the computer off. Hold the "Off" button for 5 - 10 seconds at least to give the computer time to cycle down.
Are you using a wireless keyboard/mouse? Replace the batteries and power the computer back "On"
If it appears only the mouse is dead, (Winkey can open the Start menu) use your keyboard skills to close applications and go to an orderly Turn Off Computer and replace your mouse or its batteries if it is wireless.
Know your basic keyboard shortcuts.
Alt +Tab = Cycle between active applications
Alt + File + x or c = Closes an application. You will be asked to Save your Changes
Alt + F4 = Closes an application. You will be asked to Save your Changes
If an application can not be closed using the above procedures, it will be necessary to use the "3 finger salute"
Ctrl + Alt + Delete = Open Task Manager, and use the cursor keys to select the Applications Tab and use the Tab key and cursor keys to select the application indicating it is not running.
Alt + e will select the End Task button, close the selected application and close the Task Manager.

20 - Computer Club Maintenance Tips

Add this to your spring and fall cleaning lists to physically clean your computer.
Turn the computer Off and remove the right side panel of the computer.
Use  a very fine brush and vacuum cleaner, carefully remove as much of the dust as you can, especially where it collects around the fans.
Computers create a lot of heat and heat attracts dust, animal hair etc.
Liquids containing sugar when accidentally spilled on a keyboard cannot be properly removed, BUY A NEW KEYBOARD.
The newer LCD flat screens are soft, very sensitive and should not be touched with your fingers.
Need more research on this one. It could involve members of the Brantford club sweeping the floor and washing the coffee cups after their meetings.
In the meantime, check out the following websites.

23 - Tune-ups

Start by doing the CPU - Ten Minute PC Tune up.
Next, clean out the crap creeping into the gap by removing the Spyware you think you don’t have.
Download, install and run the following freebies.

http://www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Take control of the Startup applications taking up your memory space.
If the area next to your clock in the System Tray has more than 10 icons sitting there, you have a severe memory problem and is one of the main reasons for a CPU locking up..

Another freebie - http://www.ccleaner.com/download/

Select Tools and Startup
Select the unnecessary programs and click on Delete Entry

Note : - Programs deleted from the Startup can be "started" from the Start Menu as they are needed rather than sitting in memory ready to pounce upon your computer if you just might use the application.

Whenever things still appear sluggish after all the above Tune Ups, a good reputable Registry Cleaner used on a regular basis might be the answer.

Use Google Search for “registry cleaner reviews” to see what is good and available on the market.

36 - Add Attachment to Hotmail
