Our first meeting was held in the ISAC library this morning with ten eager members attending, looking for and passing on information. Because of the size of the attendance and the size of the library, it was realized rather rapidly, changes had to be made. As there are many other activities always taking place at the centre, it was decided to change the dates and time of the meetings to 13:00 on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month and to take place in the Dining Room. (Unfortunately, we'll be limited to 100 members to stay within the Fire Laws) Fees were discussed and the majority agreement was $2/member/meeting and $3/non-member/meeting. (front office has offered to supply the coffee and cookies). The Brantford Computer Club was visited on the Internet and the idea of what could be forthcoming with our group should we put our heads together and follow their examples. Search-Engines were one of the technical topics touched on today - they are being updated constantly - check these most popular and powerful on the Internet
E-mail questions were asked and shows much more can be explored in this area for Setup, Sending, saving data and/or pictures and of course, virus and spam protection. It is suggested you should visit the following web site for the basics of good e-mailing with Outlook Express. http://ca.geocities.com/bpaling@rogers.com/index.htm Desktop picture installation from e-mail, My Pictures and http://www.steves-digicams.com/ was shown and how to use Show Desktop Icons to give a clean desktop. It was pointed out where all members of the group must know their ISPs (Internet Service Providers), e-mail addresses AND their passwords. Tips and Tricks will be discovered individually and it would be expected this information will be passed on during our future meetings and to do this best can be done by the person demonstrating on a computer for all of us. Firefox and IE7 browsers were given a brief demo to show their zooming and tab features. The tech experts prefer Firefox because of its less vulnerability to virus. It's just too bad you can't use it to update you M$ (Microsoft) programs. The topic of Skype and its use was discussed briefly (it was getting too close to lunch time) and a demonstration of its use will be shown at the next meeting. For those who would like to get a jump start, you can download, install the program and do a search for grandpa_bev. They do have an annual fee of less than $20 if you wish to use the PC to Telephone feature to call anywhere in North America. Calls to United Kingdom are less than $0.03 a minute. PC to PC to anywhere in the world is free. The following link will connect you to their web site. We covered a lot of material today and it will be covered in regular newsletters posted on the internet for you at this address. Save the address from the Address Window above in your Favorites or Bookmarks as you will need it frequently for reference. Karen Mackay has volunteered to act as Secretary to take notes of the meetings for the newsletters, take attendance and collect the fees. Bruce Shelley has volunteered to assist in setup and takedown of equipment and, although I haven't asked him yet, seating for the meetings. Overall, I was pleased to see so many of you show today for our first meeting and your support. I hope to see you again Tuesday afternoon, January 23, 2007 in the Dining Room. If you have any computer topic near and dear to your heart you would like to know more about, please send me an e-mail. bpaling"AT"rogers.com (Remove "AT" and replace with @) Sincere thanks to the following pioneers for establishing the ISAC Computer Support Group.
