Curriculum Based Educational Programs @ The Beachville District Museum

Founded in 1789 as one of the first major settlements in Oxford County, Beachville was once an important centre for industry, supplies and communication. Beachville is proud to be the home of the first recorded baseball game in North America, and the largest open face quarries in Canada.

Science and Technology

Earth and Space Systems

Grade 3 – Soils in the Environment(offered year round)

Investigate the components of various soils; identify living things found in soil.

Examine what happens when soil and water are shaken together, effect of moving water on soil.

Includes a tour of our Lime Quarry Exhibit and the Rock Center for close-up observation of soils.

Grade 4 – Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion(offered year round)

Make a Fossil mould to demonstrate how the fossil was formed.

Discuss effects of wind, water and ice on the landscape, and other natural causes of erosion.

Learn the 3 major rock types, with a focus on the sedimentary rock of our local lime quarries.

Includes a tour of our Lime Quarry Exhibit and the Rock Center for testing and comparisons.

Social Studies

Heritage and Citizenship

Grade 2 - Traditions and Celebrations – (offered mid November until January)

Through exploration, crafts and games, students will discover Christmas customs and traditions from countries all over the globe.

Discover Queen Victoria’s influence on our own Christmas traditions.

Includes a tour of the Victorian Christmas Exhibit at the museum, and a craft.

Grade 3 - Pioneer Life – (offered year round)

Discover the world of the rural family prior to 1900; describing the lifestyles of male and female pioneers, and the various roles of individuals in a pioneer settlement.

Explore the historical rooms overflowing with artifacts. View a turn of the century general store. Includes a discussion of the first Aboriginal people and first settlers in Oxford County, and how they utilized their natural resources.

History

Canada: A Changing Society

Grade 8 – Canada’s Involvement in WWI & WWII – (offered late October, early November)

A study of the impact of WWI & WWII on Canada and the world community.

Understanding factors contributing to change in our society

Discuss the changing roles of women and the changes in the local economy.

Includes a tour of our Remembrance Day Exhibit.
