John McDonald, four times mayor of Ingersoll, MCDONALD – In Ingersoll on the 19th March, John McDonald aged … years. The funeral will take place from his late residence, Thames St. at 2:30 Tuesday
AN OLD RESIDENT – In the death of John McDonald of Ingersoll, Oxford loses one of its oldest residents, and one who was for many years prominent in the life of the district. The deceased leaves a very wide circle of friends and relatives; among these are Jas. Noxon and Dr. Springer of Woodstock, his sons-in-law. Mr. McDonald was once a candidate for parliament in the South Riding. The funeral took place this afternoon. Sentinel Review 22 March 1887 page 1, col. 3.
Ingersoll Tribune The name of John McDonald is as familiar as a household word to anyone who has known the history of Ingersoll during the last half century, in fact during its whole history, for he was emphatically one of the pioneers of this place. He was born in the year 1809 and consequently 78 years of age at the time of his death, which took place Saturday evening last about eleven o’clock. Four years ago he was seized with a stroke of paralysis which entirely prostrated him and he has been an invalid ever since, requiring the constant attendance of a nurse, and since that time has only been seen on the street on occasional intervals. When the weather was favourable he has been driven out in a carriage or has been wheeled on the sidewalk in his invalid chair. He was born in Dumbarton Scotland, in the year 1809, as already mentioned, and was brought with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McDonald, to America in 1912, settling first in the state of New York, and afterwards removing to Zorra in 1826. In 1834 he married Flora Fletcher, daughter of John Fletcher of Nissouri, whom he has survived only a few months, she having died only last autumn. He moved to Ingersoll in 1840 and was at that time a bailiff of the District Court. In 1841 he opened a general store in the town dealing in dry goods, hardware, groceries and general merchandise but as the town advanced the store became more and more decided in its character and the proprietor finally confined himself to one department of dry goods. He retired from the business about the year 1868, having during his twenty-eight years of business accumulated considerable property. He was one of a committee of three who selected the site on which the Charles St. Methodist church stands. He filled the mayor’s chair of Ingersoll for four years, namely 1867, 1872, 1876 and 1877. He was widely known and very highly respected. Besides his six children who are all living, namely Mrs. James Noxon, Mrs. Dr. Springer of Woodstock, Mrs. Tolmie of Hamilton, Mrs. Fraser of N.W.T., Miss F. McDonald and Mr. Jas. F. McDonald of Ingersoll, he leaves a host of other relatives to mourn his loss. Carried in the Sentinel Review 26 March 1887

Our family dates back to 1842 in New Zealand with the original couple coming from Scotland. A mass of information has been accrued since they all had big families. One of our members made a comprehensive family tree last century. Any further information would be welcome.
