September 4, 2001

By the time this article is in print many students will have the outline of project assignments they must complete during the coming semester or term. It helps to get an early start. And it doesn't hurt to have a reliable source for good information.

One such source is the Canada site www.canada.gc.ca , which contains a wealth of current and historical information that can streamline your research and take your project over the top.

Statistics. Sounds boring but go to Statistics Canada http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/ and click on "Browse by subject", then "People": you can get a profile of the sound recording industry in Canada, information on the smoking habits of Canadians, how many of us commute to work and how far, categories of people collecting employment insurance and how many hours of TV we watch each week… to mention only a sampling. Statistics Canada has countless stats (no pun intended) to add polish to your project.

Learn about the special role that Canada has played in international affairs, particularly in the United Nations at http://www.canschool.org/menu-e.asp or the history behind our national pride in our veterans at http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/youth/.

Get the story behind Terry Fox, Roberta Bondar or other Canadian heroes by following the Path of Heroes at http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca/poh-sdh/english/index.html.

Learn about the maple leaf flag, the national anthem or the Royal Family at http://www.pch.gc.ca/ceremonial-symb/english/index.html. Follow the links from http://canada.gc.ca/canadiana/cdaind_e.html to find information about Canada, our government and our people.

A handy indepth resource on the Canada site for students is Schoolnet http://www.schoolnet.ca/home/e/resources/. SchoolNet's Learning Resources includes over 5,000 quality educational materials evaluated and approved by professional educators.
Despite the formal look of its front page, Schoolnet has resources for students of all ages. Click on Learning Resources to view a multi-step directory of links to information from architecture and astronomy to "zeroBio"

Interactive Zone http://canada.gc.ca/canadiana/interactive_zone_e.html is a simple to navigate list of links for kids in the Canada site. It is divided into Teachers/Students, Quizzes/Puzzles, Virtual Tours, Multimedia and Kids Zone.

There is a phenomenal wealth of information for students of all ages on the Canada site. Use it as the backbone of a project, support a statement or just have some fun…but don't get lost!
