On-Line Treatment for Baseball Addicts
By Mary Kingsbury
For The Oxford Review
May 14, 2001
Around this time of the year with the NHL playoffs nearly finished, a gentleman's (or lady's) thoughts turn to … BASEBALL!
The Blue Jay's have been entertaining us for a number of years, but our World Series hopes have been dashed early in recent years. This year could be different! The bats were solid during Spring Training and have continued into regular season play. Pitching staff has also been consistent!
As dedicated fans living in the country without cable or satellite, our family has always turned on the radio for Blue Jay games. Unfortunately over the past couple of years the radio reception and availability of games on CBS have steadily diminished. This makes for a VERY long and frustrating season.
Finally, the internet has provided us with solutions. There are many sites available dedicated to avid baseball fans, including the availability of games on-line. Granted there are no streamed pictures available on the sites we use, but the play by play is very well done.
Excite's major league sports site is an excellent place to follow the game. http://sports.excite.com/mlb This is the only site that we have found with auto refresh and truly play-by-play, as opposed to inning-by-inning, updates. Scroll down the left-hand side of the home page to see which games are currently in progress, and choose your team. You can also click on final scores to get a complete recap and the stats for the game.
Our favourite site for information and stats is the Major League Baseball site http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/homepage/mlb_homepage.jsp. This site has links to ALL major league teams. You can get all your recaps, box scores, injuries, standings, fantasy baseball, and headlines on this site too. Warning … sometimes this site is slow in downloading. Go to the individual team sites and you can get ticket information, team news, ticket specials, and minor league information.
You can listen to any major league game through live audio at a cost of $10.00 for the season. Since we haven't actually tried this, we can't verify the quality or speed of transmission. Click on the live audio option on the Major League Baseball site and follow the instructions. http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/audio/mlb_gameday_audio.jsp
It doesn't matter which team is your favourite, you'll be able to follow their progress no matter where they are or where you are.
