The Doctor is Always In…On the Internet
Steve Bellinger
March 19, 2001

The Internet is not a replacement for direct consultation with a qualified health professional but is a good source for health related information.

Healthology.com (http://www.healthology.com) offers an in-depth look at many current health issues from dieting to hair loss. The site contains articles on a variety of health topics from reliable sources. These articles can be easily accessed using a search in the site. Although there is a large amount of information available, this site's speciality is webcasts. These television-like programs show a discussion on a specific topic by a panel of experts in the field. These informative webcasts can be viewed at any time, making them a convenient and easy way to learn about nearly any health concern.

If you are looking for a more comprehensive source of information for you may want to try the Complete Home Medical Guide (http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/texts/guide) which is sponsored by Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. This site contains information on symptoms, diagnosis, first aid, safety, treatment, and prevention of disease. A user-friendly interface makes the web site easy to navigate. You will be able to find what you are looking for very quickly.

The Canada site contains an excellent source of health information, The Canadian Health Information Network (http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/customtools/homee.html). This site contains a search engine together with topics of current interest and pages of links to articles on various health topics.

Finally, if you are looking for ways to improve your physical fitness then you might be interested in the Just Move web site at http://www.justmove.org. Information is provided by the American Heart Association on exercise programs, the benefits of daily physical activity, personal fitness tests, and fitness news can be obtained. As an added bonus, you can sign up with a virtual trainer who e-mails messages of encouragement and suggestions each day. This resource could be the perfect online tool to help you stay in shape.

These sites offer insightful answers to an array of health questions but cannot replace a professional opinion for potentially serious situations.
