Searching for Scholarships
Heather Reid
December 1, 2001

Tuition for universities and colleges has increased dramatically over the past 10 years.

To cope with the increase, a greater number of high school students are getting part-time jobs.

As a result of having part-time jobs, some students come to class tired every day and their grades may begin to suffer.

Having a part-time job is a great experience and it can help you adjust to life after high school, but for some students it just isn't an option.

Whether they don't have the time or they simply can't find a job, students do have another option for bringing in some money.

Scholarships are a great way for students to turn their hard work into some serious cash. For example, the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation Award winners receive $20,000 plus an opportunity to participate in a mentor or internship program. A maximum of 30 of these awards are given annually to recipients who show a record of leadership and community service.

Not all scholarships offer as much as the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, but they are still worth your time to apply. A lot of the scholarships available are never won, simply because no one applies for them.

If students are looking for scholarships, they can ask their school guidance counselor or they can take matters into their own hands by conducting a search on the Internet.

The Internet provides a phenomenal listing of scholarships that can help make a student's life just a little bit easier.

A great site for getting a list of scholarships is www.studentawards.com. This is a free site where you register on-line in order to receive scholarship updates.

Registering takes about ten minutes because you have to answer some questions so that studentawards.com can send you a personalized list of awards that you are eligible for.

To register you need to click the big picture on the home page that reads "New to studentawards.com". From there you select the country you want to receive scholarships from. You then answer questions for which you must give your name, and email address, as well as answer questions like "What are your hobbies?".

After answering all the questions you will have your own member profile and an awards mailbox.

When you open your mailbox you can expect to find a complete list of all awards that match your member profile. By clicking on one of the award titles you get the value of the award, number of awards given out annually, the application deadline, a description of what is needed to be eligible, instructions on how to go about applying for the award and contact information.

Studentawards.com is truly a life and money saver.

It is a fast and accessible way to find scholarships. I also recommend www.scholarshipscanada.com as another great web site. These sites are for students of all academic and athletic levels. You never know what you can find and how much money you can save.

Happy searching!
