Following the Canada Summer Games on the Net

It's not everyday that an event of the magnitude of the Canada Summer Games comes to town. If you are interested in following the games, attending any of the events, knowing the hype or buying some souvenirs, two web sites provide the information you need.

The Canada Games web site www.canadagames.ca has a dramatic home page and provides very useful background information. Use it to learn about the Canada Games Council, the purpose of the Games, future host cities, technical information by sport, records and rankings and linking to sponsors' web sites, including those of a myriad of sports organizations.

The web site for the 2001 Canada Summer Games, www.2001canadagames.com, has more local and current information.

For the first time in the 33 year history of the Games, they are being hosted by a partnership of communities. Alliance London consists of the cities of London, St. Thomas and Woodstock, the village of Grand Bend and the University of Western Ontario. Information is available on the Alliance, it's individual members, how they were awarded the Games, the history of the Canada Games, and the theme and logo of the 2001 Games.

Events are being held in all the host communities. Wrestling and indoor volleyball events are scheduled in Woodstock. Site maps are provided on the 2001 Canada Games web site to help find the events and parking at all event sites. Related community and cultural events are also listed.

The list of sports events for the 15 day span of the Games is provided in an easy to navigate format. Simply click in the cell that represents the day and sport you are interested in and a list of events in that sport appears, including times and locations.

Tickets can be ordered by telephone and can be picked up at a number of locations, including the Community Complex in Woodstock.

News stories about the Games from March to the present are available in a "virtual newsroom" included in the 2001 Canada Games web site. Athlete's names are listed by province and sport. The results of the individual events will be posted during the duration of the games so that you can track team standings.

Whether or not you can make it to the Games, you can follow the action on the 2001 Canada Games web site.
