One of the most useful functions of the internet is that it makes government more accessible. The County of Oxford and six of the eight municipalities within the county have very useful web sites.
The County of Oxford site http://www.county.oxford.on.ca/ has four main components, government, tourism, economic opportunities and departments and services.
Government focuses on the organization of county departments, information (including photos) about the county councillors, and links to the Board of Health, Library and Land Division Committee. County accounts commencing in January 2001 are available under "Documents".
Tourism consists of a number of external links for information. Local businesses are accessible though a link to the County of Oxford On Line (COOL) database.
Economic Opportunities provides an interesting profile of the county including photos featuring people and activities throughout the county.
Departments and Services is laid out as a site directory. Services are organized under the headings, CAO and Clerk's Office, Corporate Services, Public Health and Emergency Services, Public Works and Social Services and Housing. To find information on water, including water reports, look under Public Works. Access groundwater reports through the Land Related Information System (LRIS) under Corporate Services.
The City of Woodstock, towns of Tillsonburg and Ingersoll and townships of Zorra, Norwich and East Zorra-Tavistock all have their own web sites accessible through "Government" on the Site Directory. These sites vary in terms of content and format. Features may include council profile, contact information, council agendas and minutes, committees, services, staff, news, information about the municipality, economic development information, forms, community events, maps, and recreation.
Local government websites are great way to learn more about your community and the services available to you. The internet can bring you closer to your local government.
