Movie Reviews and the Internet
Steve Bellinger
April 3, 2001
Sometimes it can be difficult to find objective and comprehensive movie reviews. Some critics only like thought-provoking dramas while others look for fast paced thrillers. Often, the reviewer is biased to one genre of movie over all others.
Further complicating the issue is the fact that many times, only one movie review is available. You may be able to find one in the paper, or catch a glimpse of a critic's show on the television but locating these reviews can be just as difficult as picking a movie you will enjoy!
Fortunately, the Internet can solve all of these problems. There are as many movie critics on the Internet as there are movies.
The site for Roger Ebert's television show, http://asp.tvplex.go.com/ebertandthemovies/ebert.asp is really useful. This page immediately displays a list of all current movies with a quick "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" review. An audio segment of the review from the television show can also be accessed for each movie. Another interesting feature is a similar review format for movies recently released on video and DVD. Most importantly, along with all of the movie review information, this site is backed by thirty years of Rogers Ebert's experience and credibility critiquing movies.
Critics.com (http://www.critics.com) does not offer a famous critic or fancy audio segments but it did contain insightful reviews. Also, it is a very simple web page to use. Movies can be easily grouped by year, title and best rated. The most useful feature offered by this particular site is that it links to other reviews published by newspapers, magazines, and other Internet sites. For any given film, literally dozens of reviews have been published and made available.
With the aid of the Internet, many movie reviewers are now at your service. Although some of them don't always produce a consistent review, you now have the means to seek a second opinion. Choosing an enjoyable movie is only a mouse click away!
