Investigating the Family Tree
Susan Shepley
April 17, 2001

Whether you are an experienced researcher or just interested in the roots of your surname, the Internet is a valuable tool to use for finding out more about your family history.

A good place to start your search is on the Oxford County Library home page at http://www.ocl.net. Click on the Genealogy link on the left side of the page. You will now see a list of local, national, and international pages to help you get started in your search.

If you are looking for local information, such as town censuses or cemetery records, look at the Town of Ingersoll Census Database with censuses from 1851-1901. The 1871 Census for all of Canada is now on the net, with an easy to use searchable feature.

The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid is a collection of the surnames, cemetery name and location of over two million interments from several thousand cemeteries, cairns, memorials, and cenotaphs across the province.

The Oxford County Branch of Ontario Genealogical Society and the Oxford Historical Society post information on their upcoming meetings on a joint web page linked to Oxford County Library's Genealogy and Local History page.

The Ontario GenWeb is a unique place to look for information, as it is a collection of shared family information and research tips from people across the province.

For national genealogy information, The Canadian Genealogy and History Page has lots of links from "East to West." The Archives of Canada also has a web page with interesting photographs and information about their various collections of local history.

A wonderful resource for family information is the Latter Day Saints Family Search. The records on this site are phenomenal, some dating back into the 1500s. You can search the records by name, and get in contact with other people who are researching the same family as you. View family trees, and find links to other great genealogy resources on the Internet.

Happy hunting!
