"Online Diaries"
October 28, 2000
Susan Shepley

If you like soap operas, drama and excitement there is a web site for you!

The traditional diary has taken on a new spin at Open Diaries.com (http://www.opendiary.com), a site that lays claim to being the first interactive diary community on the Internet, with over 100 000 diaries on their database. People have traded in their diary key for a password and username as they pour out their feelings, write poems and spill secret crushes onto the Internet. But unlike the traditional diary hidden under the mattress, these Open Diary members want you to read their diaries!

This site has a listing of the diaries on their site, sorted by location, age, and user names. Each diary is titled to give you an idea of the content and to spark your interest. If you create a login name, you can save your favourite diaries and go back to look at them each day, keeping up with your new online friend and their daily soap opera.

The site has a "Topic of the Week" section where you can read entries on such topics as "The Most Important Lesson My Dad Ever Taught Me" and "The Best Day Of My Life." When visiting the thousands of diaries here, you are not just limited to read them and keep going. You can actually leave notes to the writer, telling them you enjoyed their writing or offering a word of advice. Readers can nominate their favourite diarists to be recognized on the main page of the site.

The entries on the Open Diary site vary in topics, writers, and styles. Some people write in typical journal style, venting out their problems to the world, whereas others write their diary as if it is a story with an imaginary character penning the diary. Others write about their views of current affairs and issues, causing great debate with their readers. The Open Diary community is just like any other, with it's own cliques, alliances, and villains. It should be noted that some of the entries could be offensive, and not all of the material is suited for children. For a fun couple of hours of reading, check out Open Diary.com!
