"Escape Reality with Reality TV"
June 24, 2000
Jessie Coffey
It is a craze that is sweeping across the country. Reality television has been gaining popularity over recent years but the introduction of Survivor to the airwaves has brought the trend to a pinnacle of success. Across the country millions of people are tuning in Wednesday nights at eight o'clock to see what the contestants will do to survive and who will be the next person voted off the island. And the next day thousands of people are logging into the Survivor web site (approximately 150,000 hits a day) at http://www.cbs.com/network/tvshows/mini/survivor to get the scoop on the latest island happenings.
The Survivor website has grown from a page offering basic information about the show to a full-fledged database of details. Photos of the show's contestants link to mini-biographies in which the reader learns not only personal information, but he or she can also see a record of who each contestant has voted against at the Tribal Council. After each show an interview with the most recently departed castaway is posted to the site. As well, articles are available which recounts the previous episodes in great detail.
The web site supplements the television show in a variety of ways. Site users can enter a sweepstakes by guessing who will be voted off the island next. They can also place votes in a "Survival Poll." And for those truly dedicated fans, it is possible to subscribe to a weekly electronic newsletter full of updates and tidbits about the island happenings.
Jealous of the entire adventure? Do you wish you had been one of the chosen 16? Does surviving for seven weeks in the wilderness seem like an easy way to make a million dollars? The Survivor web site offers details on qualifying for Survivor II: the Australian Outback. The adventures continue.
