"A Pinch of This and a Dash of That"
June 10, 2000
Jessie Coffey
It is easy to get into a cooking rut. There just aren't enough hours in the day to be creative in the kitchen and before you know it you have a "Meatloaf Night" and leftovers are a way of life. Sure, you could go to the library or the bookstore and collect a stack of cookbooks, but if you had the time to go to the library or the bookstore then you would probably have time to cook creatively. Allrecipes.com (http://www.allrecipes.com) lets you browse thousands of new recipe ideas from the comfort of your home computer, at a time that is convenient to you.
An easy to navigate page, Allrecipes.com offers links to the "Recipe of the Day," the "Tip of the Day," the "Top Ten," the "Recipe Exchange," and a link to an online cooking supplies shopping site. A link is also provided to "Dinner in an Instant," a section that lists menus that can be whipped up in 15 to 40 minutes.
It is possible for the user to browse through the categories on the left side of the page, or to use the on-site search engine to track down a specific dish or ingredient. The icons along the bottom of the page, as well as a drop-down menu in the upper right corner, allow for more specific subject searches. For example, while one could browse the general dessert category from the menu on the left, it is possible to search more specifically for cookie, cake, or pie recipes by using the icons along the bottom.
Allrecipes.com is not without an interactive component. Free registration on the page provides the user with a e-newsletter full of popular recipes and cooking tips for the beginner and the gourmet. Registration also provides access to a personal recipe box where one can save anything that might have potential for future reference. As well, registered users are able to create an online shopping list to keep track of any ingredients they might need to pick up to reproduce any of the provided recipes.
Learn how to make your own Baba Ghanoush, or a homemade version of the now famous Blooming Onion. Try Pollo Bella, Golden Lasagna, Bouillabaisse or Big Charlie's Gumbo. Whether it's an appetizer, a dessert, an entrée, or a vegetarian dish, Allrecipes.com will expand your culinary horizons.
