"Touchdown!"
July 15, 2000
Trevor Down

This year the Oxford Spartans joined the recently created Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), an organization that is making use of the Internet to reach its fans. The web site allows fans and players to see how each team in the league is doing. On http://www.ovfl.org, a person can find out how a player is doing compared to both teammates and to other players in the league.

In the "League Stats" section, a person is able to see if players such as Oxford's own Dave Stephenson and Matt Alexander are leading in tackles or defensive points. It also shows the leaders for each type of major category, such as passing yards, receiving yards, kicking and punting yards, and the average length of the player's kick. This site has relatively up-to-date results in the "Standings" section, showing the details of both the leagues divisions and featuring how the Spartans are doing in the OVFL West Division. This section also has a run-down of all the scores from each week of the season.

There is also a separate section, "Team Stats," that features the statistics for each player, allowing anyone to see what a player or team has done during the season. Some of the other sections on the site include "Constitution," which has the complete league rules, and "Updates," which features any new news. Also, there are the "Executive" and "Members" sections that detail contact information.

One of the more interesting parts of the web site is the "Honour Roll" section. In this section the viewer can see all the OVFL players who have gone on to play football at a University or College level. Some of the players have gone on to play for the major schools in the NCAA Division 1, such as Stanford and Michigan State. In the next several years, there will be additions to this section as current players move on to the next level of competition. The web site also features links to the official CFL, OUA, and CIAU web sites.

This web site is a good site for anyone who is a fan of football, and wants to follow the Spartans through the season. Log on and see how the Spartans do this summer!
