"I Know A Secret"
April 22, 2000
Jessie Coffey
The Colonel's recipe has eleven secret herbs and spices. The now legendary Soup Nazi gave up his business when the Seinfeld gang found his secret recipes. Nearly every restaurant has a house dressing or a secret sauce. Thanks to the hard working people behind Top Secret Recipes (http://www.topsecretrecipes.com) you can now try your hand at recreating your favourite restaurant food in your own kitchen.
The site's main function is to provide clone recipes: tried and tested taste-alikes ranging from copies of Cadbury's Crème Eggs, the Heinz 57 Steak Sauce, and the Cinnabon Icescape to the Soup Nazi's Crab Bisque. A new recipe is presented every week, and there are four years worth of archives available to browse.
There are a variety of other forums available to those in search of the truth to supplement the recipes. "The Sleuth" investigates advertising claims as well as the history behind now famous food items, such as the onion blossom. He also de-bunks many urban legends revolving around food, such as the potential for death by mixing pop rocks and soda.
Within the "Hot Mail" section, users can submit their own clone recipes, or they can join the Message Board. Posting on the message board is like joining a huge conversation with people from all over the world who are interested in the same topic. Requests for specific recipes can be made, and secrets are revealed.
"Goodies" is a section full of all the miscellaneous information that such a site inspires. There is a Metric conversion chart, a Frequently Asked Questions section, a site history and a biography of the site founder, and an album of candy bar wrappers. It is also possible to order the Top Secret Recipe books from the web site. Rounding out the site, "The Store" provides links to other sites on cooking, entertainment, family, health, and travel.
Craving some homemade KFC-like Extra Tasty Crispy chicken? Or do you have the secret behind the salad dressing available at East Side Mario's? Stop by Top Secret Recipes and see what might tickle your tastebuds and inspire your inner chef.
