"Quilting on the Net"
December 11, 1999
Madelyn Wilson
Have you ever wanted to learn how to quilt?
Well here is your chance! The Internet can be a tool for a quilter.
You can find everything from patterns and books, to fabric. Or get your questions answered and meet other quilters through email discussions.
I have been visiting some of the sites available, and below are two of the literally hundreds that are out there.
Quilter's Online Resource, http://www.nmia.com/~mgdesign/qor/index.html, is excellent. The graphics are good. It has a beginner's section with easy quilt patterns and a glossary of terms.
It also shows step-by-step techniques for the novice quilter.
If you are interested in quilt swaps, free patterns, or pen pals, or even if you are looking to "chat" with other quilters, this is the site to visit.
They also offer items for sale as well.
Quilting for Beginners, By Beginners, http://www.sostre.com/beginnersquiltrs11.htm, was my favourite of all the web site I visited. It has good links and interesting ideas for the new quilter.
The links for on-line classes were quite helpful. I found the tips on how to get started really helpful. On caution about this site is that some of the email addresses are wrong.
Another way to search for quilting on the Internet is to search for quilt web rings using nav.webring.org/.
A web ring is a circle of the sites that have similar content; they are connected to each other by links.
All you do is type "quilt" in the search text box, and click on search.
So, if it's quilts you crave while on the Internet, these sites are a good place to start.
Happy e-quilting!
