1999 International Year of Older Persons
August 21, 1999
Heather Slade

Seniors! This is your year!

The United Nations has declared 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons in order to raise awareness about the joys and concerns of an aging global population.

Find out what your community, your provinces, your country and your world are doing to make 1999 a special year for you! Visit www.iyop-aipa.ic.gc.ca for highlights from the Canadian government.

There is certainly a lot going on to commemorate this UN designation.

Through this web site you cannot only access the story behind the International Year of Older Persons, but also check out the special research projects initiated in 1999. There is also a calendar listing of community events taking place in the remainder of the year-in Ontario, in Canada and abroad!

How do today's seniors contribute to the economy, community and family? An interesting statistics section allows you to see for yourself as you compare stats related to these and other areas, such as health, demographics, independence and leisure.

Visit the site and share your thoughts on aging, or just increase your awareness. After all, we are living in a country where 16per cent of the population is over the half of 65, a percentage predicted to double by 2045!).

Whether you are an older adult of today or of tomorrow, this site can help you make a positive contribution to this important year of celebration and education.

Heather's Internet Tip: Keep a journal of helpful Internet tips you have discovered. If you do not use the Internet for some time, the things that are forgotten can surprise you! The journal will allow you to refresh your memory about those things previously learned. Keep the journal close at hand when planning to use the computer so that you can check problem areas and keep track of new information as you access it.
