Oxford
County Board of Health Building
(formerly the County Jail)
Originally
constructed as the County Gaol (jail) in 1854, this
building now houses the Oxford
County Board of Health. The origins of this Italian
Romanesque building are illustrated by the stone mask
of murderer Thomas Cook
which can be viewed in the front entryway.
Over the
years, various Health Department offices have been located
in other buildings on Court House Square. At one time,
the Oxford Health Unit was in the Old
Registry Office, where “well baby clinics”
were held on the first Thursday of each month. Other
Health Offices were located in the basement of the Court
House, while still others were in the Gaol
Governor’s house.
