About Oxford Reads

Oxford Reads is a community-wide reading initiative that connects each of Oxford County Library’s unique communities while celebrating Canadian literature fostering discussion.

After compiling long and short lists of potential titles, The Purchase was selected by a committee of Oxford County Library staff and considering the following criteria:

  • Canadian author
  • Work of fiction
  • Potential to appeal to a broad audience
  • Title can generate discussion on a variety of topics/issues
  • Diverse program potential and can work as a community builder
  • Author will ideally have some name recognition or acclaimed work

The 2018 Oxford Reads title is The Purchase by Linda Spalding. The Purchase won the 2012 Governor General’s Award for Fiction.

Linda Spalding was born in Kansas and lived in Mexico and Hawaii before immigrating to Canada in 1982. She is the author of four critically acclaimed novels, The Purchase (awarded Canada's Governor General's Literary Award), Daughters of Captain Cook, The Paper Wife, and (with her daughter Esta) Mere. Her nonfiction includes A Dark Place in the Jungle, Riska: Memories of a Dayak Girlhood, and Who Named the Knife. In 2003 Spalding received the Harbourfront Festival Prize for her contribution to the Canadian literary community. She lives in Toronto, where she is an editor at Brick magazine.
